To succeed as a self-published author nowdays, you need a range of different skills. So what are they, and how many do you have? How many do you still need to cultivate?
I enjoyed the ten suggestions in this post from James Scott Bell. https://killzoneblog.com/2015/02/top-ten-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-writing-life.html
He covers many of the things I have been thinking about lately, as well as some that I hadn’t. So obviously you need to love writing, you need to have grit, determination and staying power. You need to not be put off easily and keep turning up. To learn to cope with whatever life throws at you – both good and bad.
Some of the things I haven’t thought so much about lately, but which are also a vital part of the life of a writer:
- to be an artist and craftsman
- to be able to multi-task, to promote your work and be practical as well as creative, and
- to not let short-term success go to your head.
Which tips are your favorites?
